SWANA Leadership
Currently, Murray Griffin, President and CEO, and Joel Scott, Vice President/Landfill Operations, are serving on the Board of Directors of the Solid Waste Association of North America- Georgia Chapter. As of January 1, 2010, Joel Scott will begin serving a two year term as Vice President of the organization. Both have been long-time members serving on many committees and participating in SWANA-sponsored activities like the annual Road-E-O which showcases equipment operators’ skills and the annual awards program.
NSWMA Leadership
Murray Griffin was recognized for his two years of service as the chairman of the Georgia Chapter of NSWMA at the Southeast Annual Conference at Amelia Island on September 12, 2007. Murray currently servers as the chapter's Board of Governor's Representative.
Client Recognition
Laurens County Solid Waste Management Authority Honored both Nationally and in Georgia
Michael D. Snipes, Solid Waste Director of the Laurens County Solid Waste Management Authority (LCSWMA), accepted the Silver Excellence Award at the 2009 WASTECON show in Long Beach, California. The national award was given to recognize excellence in landfill operations at their Old Macon Road Landfill in Dublin, Georgia.
Additionally, LCSWMA has received the 2009 First Place Award from Keep Georgia Beautiful, Inc. for their recycling program. The LCSWMA has a multi-faceted program that includes PET bottle recycling, single-stream recycling and a first-permitted-in-the state composting operation. LCSWMA takes a very active supporting role on the "Green Team" which is comprised of the schools, local businesses, civic groups, industries and a hospital that work hard to make the program a success. In 2008, LCSWMA received a Distinguished Service Citation from the national Keep America Beautiful, Inc. for their recycling program.
Augusta-Richmond County Deans Bridge Road Landfill Recieves Award for Top Management
At the SWANA Georgia Chapter Fall Conference held October 14-16, 2009 in Augusta, Georgia, the Augusta-Richmond County Deans Bridge Road Landfill was recipient of the top landfill management award for the state. Accepting the award was Mark Johnson, the Solid Waste Director. Recognition well deserved, the Deans Bridge Road Landfill is undergoing a $20 million dollar renovation which includes a state-of-the-art scale complex, a six-bay maintenance building, a customer convenience drop-off center, an administration building and entranceway improvements.
Camden County Awarded Georgia's Highest Honor
The Solid Waste Association of North America (SWANA) - Georgia Chapter has awarded The Camden County Solid Waste Authority for Outstanding Landfill Operations for 2007. The Municipal Solid Waste (MSW) and the Construction & Demolition (C & D) landfills located on S.R. 110 in Woodbine, Georgia between the Satilla River and the St. Mary's River were recognized as being the best in the state for excellence in operations, financial strength, resourcefulness and community involvement. Under the direction of Mr. Lannie Brant, Solid Waste Director, and Mr.Orville Saunders, Assistant Solid Waste Director, the landfill has scored over 95 percent in the Georgia Environmental Protection Division’s inspections over the last five years.
Houston County Facility Receives National Recognition
The Solid Waste Association of North America (SWANA) has selected the Houston County Solid Waste Disposal Facility for the silver excellence award in landfill management for 2007. The award was presented at SWANA’s national conference, Wastecon, in Reno, Nevada on October 18, 2007. This award recognizes Houston County's MSW landfill, located off Ga. 247 south of Kathleen, as the second best landfill in the nation. The landfill has received a perfect score of 100 on eight of its last 9 bi-annual inspections. This award follows the recent accolades presented to Houston County by the Georgia Chapter of SWANA as the best landfill operation in Georgia for 2007. ACC has served as Houston County’s solid waste consultant for the past year and assisted the County in preparing the applications for both of these awards.
