Stormwater Inspections: A Growing Focus for Landfills

by Richie Deason

Regulators across the country are paying closer attention to how industrial facilities manage stormwater—and landfills are increasingly in the spotlight. Even in states where inspections have historically been rare, agencies are showing up more often and using detailed checklists to evaluate compliance.

Georgia provides a timely example. In 2022, the Environmental Protection Division (EPD) renewed its five-year stormwater permit. Since then, inspections of landfills, transfer stations, and hauling companies have ramped up. A recent inspection in Laurens County showed just how detailed the process can be.

Let’s be real—solid waste facilities that used to fly under the radar are now inspection targets. At ACC, we’re already seeing it in the field. The easiest way to stay ahead? Grab the EPD Inspection Checklistsand run a mock inspection. You’ll catch the gaps before they do, and it makes the real inspection a whole lot less painful.

Steps you can take now:

  • Review your Stormwater Pollution Prevention Plan (SWPPP). Make sure it’s current, signed, and matches site conditions.

  • Organize your records. Quarterly inspections, annual reports, and corrective actions should be easy to produce.

  • Do your own walkthrough. Use a checklist to spot exposed materials, leaks, or erosion issues before an inspector does.

  • Refresh staff training. A quick reminder session ensures your team is ready when inspectors ask questions.

Even if your site hasn’t been inspected recently, the trend is clear: stormwater compliance is getting more attention nationwide—so a proactive review today helps avoid surprises tomorrow.

Your Best Prep Tool:  EPD Inspection Checklists

Use the same tools inspectors carry. Download them here:

These lists review a diverse range of topics, such as:

  • Records and reporting requirements

  • Stormwater Pollution Prevention Plan (SWPPP) review points

  • Site walk items (outfalls, stockpiles, drainage areas)

  • Scoring criteria for compliance

Reviewing these checklists ahead of time helps you catch  and repair issues  - before EPD does.
